Voice Over

The term "voice over" (often called "overvoice" in German-speaking countries) is frequently used in the world of film and video production.

It describes the technique in which a voice is superimposed over another voice without replacing the audio track. A voice over is often used for foreign-language interviews (original sounds). The original voice is retained and is only supplemented by a German voice over. This technique helps to support communication.

The voice over helps a lot to tell a story, so you will encounter a voice over in various media: in commercials, documentaries, training videos and even in feature films. It's an important technique for conveying emotion or moving the plot forward. It can be used in a variety of ways - from translations to the presentation of monologues, thoughts and feelings. With a clear voice, you can convey important information that the audience might not otherwise understand. It gives the audience context and helps them understand the plot better.

It is important that there are professional voice-over artists for this task. Voice actors often have acting training and can slip into different vocal roles depending on the job. The right voice can have a significant impact on the mood of a video. If you have a dramatic scene, a deeper, more forceful voice can heighten the tension. In a happy scene, a bright, friendly voice can emphasize the positive mood.

Choosing the right voice is therefore crucial and certain points should be taken into account:

  • m/f/d: When choosing a speaker, pay attention to the gender of the original voice
  • Target audience: Who is the audience and which voice would appeal to them?
  • Tone of voice: The tone of voice should match the mood of your video. Is it serious, funny or informative?
  • Accent: A certain accent can increase authenticity if it is necessary or relevant for your project.
  • Experience: An experienced speaker can often deliver better results. Listen to his work/samples!

Recording a voice over is a creative process that involves several steps. First, you should prepare a concept, a script. It should be clear and precise so that the voiceover artist knows exactly what to say. Our producers, for example, provide exact time codes so that the voice artist knows where to start. Then you choose the right recording location. A quiet room is an important prerequisite. At Golden Claim, we have a professional, sound-suitable booth in our recording studio.

The recording itself requires patience, as the speakers read or speak the text several times in order to achieve the best results, but also to have several takes with different accents. The recording is followed by post-production. In our case (Golden Claim), our sound designer (SFX designer or sound engineer) takes care of editing the voice over.

Conclusion

Voice over is an important tool in film and video production. Ultimately, voice over is needed to overcome language barriers. Thanks to the use of AI, many work steps that were previously carried out by speakers can now be replaced by artificially generated voices. However, human emotions in the voicing still largely fall by the wayside.
